Friday Inspiration: The Red River

Little Songs About The Big Picture
Little Songs About the Big Picture by The Red River

As it is with quite a lot of the music I enjoy I was introduced to The Red River by Miss Anna (of General Oglethorpe and the Panhandlers).  She sent me a package this past winter that included a mix cd with a few of their songs.  When I visited Savannah for the General O CD release party back in February I even had the chance to hear The Red River play at The Wormhole.

Every one of their songs is worth a listen, and while the ambiance at The Wormhole may have been lacking the show was just lovely, and I hope I get the chance to see them again... perhaps the next time they swing through the Midwest.

I often find myself putting on their Tiny Desk Concert from NPR when I'm puttering about working on things in the office, writing or making things.  If any Red River kids stumble across this, I just want you to know the next time you're in Milwaukee you have a place to stay with us if you need.  Good luck, and thanks for the inspiration.

General O gets "Red Hot"

Red Hot from General O on Vimeo.

The new music video from General Oglethorpe and the Panhandlers for is for my favorite tune off of Whistle the Dirges - "Red Hot."  There are so many aspects to love about this video: the costumes, the sets, the props, the animation, and even the singing paintings.

General O to their friends

I don't think I've said enough about how much I love General Oglethorpe and the Panhandlers and their new album "Whistle the Dirges"

There's something about great musicians who are also art students that results in an amazing collaboration.  Devin Smith, who founded the band along with Anna Chandler, has been attending SCAD for film and his exquisite talent shows through their first music video.  Just watch - the very last scene will give you chills.

Their next video for the song "Red Hot" (one of my favorites) will be out soon, but both videos have already been nominated for Best Non-Narrative films of SCAD 2011.

I was lucky enough that I was able to get down to Savannah in February for the album release concert and the event reminded me what I miss about doing event photography.  They are amazing musicians and artists and I was ever so fortunate to experience the grand event they put together.

Music Vibes & Honey Do

Today things are going slowly. I've been sick since last Friday and while I've been making the most of each day stuck inside, today is just dragging out. I really don't feel like it is the afternoon already.

In better news those good music vibes I put out a month or so ago really paid off. An old friend from high school had an extra ticket to see Andrew Bird tomorrow night at the Pabst so I'm going with her! It'll be great to catch up with that lady, and it always seems to happen around musical events. The last time I was able to see her was when she traveled to Oshkosh to see the Ben Folds show at the university.

I feel a little guilty leaving Richard at home alone, especially since he has the day off from school. But really I need a good Andrew Bird fix, especially since the last time I saw him kinda fell flat - frankly, no one else was there to see him, they had all come to see the other three bands, and the whole energy was just off. Its been a good long time since I have some good live music.

Things I want to Accomplish today
1) Feeling better
2) Organizing basement/studio
3) Prepping stamps
4) Putting together and scanning a few new sets of stamps
5) Stock photos and product descriptions
6) Two new Etsy listings
7) Laundry
8) Filing
9) Breakfast for dinner

Scrubs as life's soundtrack

I’ve loved Scrubs from the beginning, but as much as I love the show I love the music even more. Some of the songs are by artists I already love, but many are new to me and help me discover new songs and new artists. One of the episodes this week “My Lawyer’s in Love” showcased an actress/musician as the children’s ward entertainer. Her songs were adorable and catchy, so Richard and I looked into the credits and looked her up. Turns out she’s even more adorable than I knew. Her name is Kate Micucci and you should check out her website - she has a few songs available for free download.

I especially like the video and the song “Dear Deer” as well as the song “Walking in Los Angeles” and I must say I can’t wait to find her album!

NOTE: I take back what I said about the free downloads, the songs are no longer listed, but there are links up to purchase her music on CD baby and listen to the songs on Myspace.
